Personal Coaching

Structured coaching for clearer behaviour, stronger direction, and better response when life asks more of you

Personal Coaching is a four-session STOP Fearing Fear® programme for people who are managing everyday life but know they are not thinking, responding or moving forward as clearly and deliberately as they could be.

People are often told to manage stress earlier, change unhelpful patterns earlier or ask for help earlier. Personal Coaching helps you recognise what that stage looks like in your own behaviour—before avoidance, indecision, frustration or loss of direction becomes embedded.

Across four structured sessions, you learn what to notice, how your Behaviour Cycles operate and how to turn recognition into clearer decisions and more deliberate action.

It is structured personal development for people who want more than insight alone. It gives you a practical framework for doing what you may already know needs to be done—and for recognising sooner when it is time to act.

What Personal Coaching gives you

Ancient woodland tree reflected in still water near Matlock

This is a four-session online coaching programme designed to help you:

  • Understand how recurring behavioural patterns may be affecting your decisions, confidence and direction.
  • You will explore how fear, responsibility, uncertainty, expectation, and emotional load can influence your thoughts, feelings, actions, decisions, and outcomes.
  • The focus is not endless discussion. It is recognition, action, outcome, and feedback.
  • You learn to recognise what is happening earlier, understand your patterns more clearly, and respond more deliberately before stress, avoidance, overwhelm, or frustration become embedded.

Who Personal Coaching is for

Personal Coaching is for people who are managing everyday life but want to think more clearly, respond more deliberately, and move forward with stronger direction.

It may be suitable if you are dealing with overthinking, avoidance, indecision, frustration, low confidence, difficult transitions, repeated patterns, poor boundaries, loss of direction, or responses that repeatedly fail to create the outcomes you want.

It is particularly suitable for people who are not looking for therapy but do want structure, challenge, clearer understanding, and a practical route forward.

When behaviour starts working against you

Most people do not struggle because they are weak, broken, or incapable. They struggle because they become caught in repeated behaviour cycles they do not fully understand.

You may recognise that you are avoiding something, reacting badly, withdrawing, pushing too hard, losing focus, overthinking, or making decisions that do not help you. But recognising what is happening is not the same as understanding the process driving it.

Personal Coaching helps you move beyond vague self-awareness and develop a practical understanding of your own behaviour.

A practical way to understand what is happening

Personal Coaching uses the full Behaviour Cycle to examine what is happening beneath the thoughts and feelings on the surface.

We look at what you are perceiving as threat, how fear and appraisal are influencing your feelings and actions, what outcomes those actions are producing, and what feedback is reinforcing the cycle.

This gives you a clearer understanding of your own behaviour and a practical route into change.

The work is forward-facing. It is not about endlessly analysing the past or remaining inside the problem. It is about recognising what is happening now, understanding the pattern, and taking more deliberate action.

How the coaching works

Personal Coaching is delivered as a structured four-session programme.

Each session lasts approximately one hour and is usually delivered online. For local clients in Derbyshire and the Peak District, outdoor Walk & Talk coaching may also be available where suitable.

Across the four sessions, we examine your current situation, identify the behaviour patterns affecting you, introduce relevant parts of the STOP Fearing Fear® framework, and apply them to real decisions, actions, outcomes and next steps.

The work is focused, practical and designed to create movement.

The process is developmental and can be therapeutic in its effect: you are not simply talking about your life, but learning to recognise your patterns, test different responses and build more deliberate forward movement across real situations.

The four-session structure

  • Session one
We focus on your current situation, the main issue you want to address, and the behaviour patterns that may be affecting your decisions, actions, and direction.
  • Session two
We examine your Behaviour Cycle in more detail: Change in Circumstance→ Threat Perception→ Pre-Cognitive Fear→ Appraisal (Memory)→ Feeling→ Action→ Outcome→ Feedback (Memory)
  • Session three
We introduce and apply key parts of the STOP Fearing Fear® framework, including the Metacognitive Resilience Equation and the MetaSTOP Method®.
  • Session four
We consolidate the work, review what has shifted, identify what action is still required, and establish how you will continue applying the framework beyond the four-session programme.

What we may cover

The exact focus depends on your situation, but Personal Coaching may include fear recognition, the Behaviour Cycle, needs fulfilment, attachment management, avoidance, responsibility, repeated patterns, emotional regulation through action, and decision-making when faced with challenge and adversity.

We may also apply key parts of the STOP Fearing Fear® framework, including the Metacognitive Resilience Equation and the MetaSTOP Method®.

The purpose remains the same: to help you understand your behaviour more clearly and respond more effectively in real life.

Between-session work

Between sessions, you may be given a simple reflection or practical action to complete.

These are not heavy worksheets or therapeutic homework. They are focused prompts designed to help you notice your behaviour, test different responses, and bring useful real-world examples into the next session.

The emphasis is on practical application, not theory.

Online or Walk & Talk

Personal Coaching is usually delivered online, making it accessible, focused, and easier to fit around everyday life.

For local clients, outdoor Walk & Talk coaching may also be available where suitable. This is not a separate coaching service. It is an alternative way of delivering the same structured programme when movement, outdoor space, and focused conversation may support clearer thinking.

Where Walk & Talk is suitable, outdoor coaching is professionally led by Paul Martin: qualified Mountain Leader, Climbing Instructor and REC Outdoor First Aid trained, with extensive experience leading people in the Derbyshire countryside and mountainous terrain.

The suitability of outdoor sessions can be discussed during your free consultation.

How this differs from Personal Intervention

Personal Intervention is usually for something current, active and pressing. It helps you understand the loop you are caught in and identify the next useful action.

Personal Coaching is more developmental. Across four structured sessions, it helps you understand recurring patterns, apply the framework, strengthen your behavioural awareness and improve how you respond over time.

A simple way to separate them is this:

  • Personal Intervention helps you respond to an active loop.
  • Personal Coaching helps you develop stronger patterns and responses over time.

Format and investment

The four-session Personal Coaching programme is £350.

This includes:

  • four structured one-to-one coaching sessions
  • practical tools, behavioural techniques and direct guidance
  • focused work on your real situation
  • clear actions between sessions
  • help recognising the fear-led patterns shaping your decisions and responses
  • continuity, review and adjustment across the four-session programme
  • brief follow-up notes or agreed actions where appropriate

A free 20-minute consultation is available before booking to discuss your situation, check suitability and establish whether Personal Coaching is the right option.

This is not passive support or reflective conversation without direction. We work to understand what is happening, why the pattern keeps repeating and what you can do differently next.
