STOP Fearing Fear® Services

Choose the right prevention route for you, your people or your organisation

People are often told to act earlier or ask for help earlier. STOP Fearing Fear® helps them recognise what “earlier” actually looks like.

It identifies the window in which unresolved fear and pressure are beginning to affect behaviour, decisions and outcomes, but before the headline problem appears.

The four services provide practical routes for deciding what to do next: immediate intervention, structured coaching, organisational speaking and training, or applied group development.

Personal Intervention addresses something current, immediate or unresolved. Personal Coaching provides structured forward development over time. Speaking & Training brings preventive mental-health and behavioural education into workplaces through Behaviour Before Burnout, and into schools and care settings through Behaviour and Fear Literacy Training. Group Development Days turn the learning into practical, challenge-based group development.

Different challenges – Same internal process.

You may be struggling with yourself, your past, your future, your relationship, your family, your children, your work, your health, your confidence, your direction, or the responsibility you carry for other people. The challenge changes, but the internal process is often the same.

The Behaviour Cycle applies whether challenge comes from home, work, health, social conflict, money, identity, memory, responsibility or uncertainty. A change in circumstance is perceived, threat perception and pre-cognitive fear occur before conscious thought, the situation is appraised through memory, a feeling forms, action follows, and the outcome feeds back into memory and influences what happens next.

Understanding that process creates the opportunity to intervene earlier, before repeated reactions become damaging patterns, escalating problems or preventable crises.

One framework – Different routes

The services are not separate ideas. They are different applications of the same behavioural prevention framework and the same Behaviour Cycle.

Whether the challenge is showing up in your own life, your relationships, your family, your team, your work or the people you are responsible for, the underlying process can be the same. Change is detected, fear responds before conscious thought, the situation is interpreted, the body activates, a reaction follows, action is taken or avoided, and the outcome feeds back into what happens next.

When these cycles remain unresolved, they can develop into stress, avoidance, conflict, burnout, poor decisions or decline. The right service depends on where the challenge is showing up, how immediate the need is, and whether the work is personal, developmental, organisational or group-based.

Which route fits?

  • Personal Intervention is the route when something is active now and needs focused attention: a repeating loop, difficult decision, conflict, avoidance, emotional strain or loss of direction. The first task is to stop the fall and establish the next useful action.
  • Personal Coaching is the route when you want structured development over time: stronger self-recognition, clearer decisions, more deliberate responses and positive forward momentum across the patterns shaping everyday life.
  • If you want to bring preventive mental-health and behavioural education into a workplace or organisation, explore Behaviour Before Burnout. For schools, care settings, children’s services and professionals responsible for young people, explore Behaviour and Fear Literacy Training. Both are available through Speaking & Training.
  • If you want practical group development through challenge, reflection, discussion and guided learning, Group Development Days are available for discussion as a developing offer.

Personal Intervention

For people dealing with something current, pressing, unresolved or starting to weigh too heavily.

Personal Intervention is focused, structured behavioural work around fear, adversity, avoidance, conflict, emotional strain, decision-making and next action. It uses the present situation to help you recognise the loop, understand how fear is influencing behaviour, interrupt unhelpful reactions earlier and decide what needs to happen next.

It is a practical application of the STOP Fearing Fear® framework and Early Self-Intervention: focused on stopping an active fall, improving the immediate situation and strengthening your ability to respond earlier when future challenges appear.

Sessions are available online or outdoors through Walk and Talk Personal Intervention for local clients in Derbyshire, the Peak District and nearby areas where suitable.

Outdoor sessions are professionally led by Paul Martin, a qualified Mountain Leader and Climbing Instructor, REC Outdoor First Aid trained, with more than a decade of outdoor-based intervention experience.

Personal Coaching

For people who are functioning, but not as clearly, strongly or deliberately as they could be.

Personal Coaching provides structured forward development around resilience, behaviour, direction, decision-making and personal responsibility. It helps you recognise repeated patterns, understand what is driving them, strengthen how you respond and turn greater awareness into deliberate action over time.

Unlike Personal Intervention, coaching is not centred on resolving one immediate or pressing situation. It develops behavioural self-recognition and Early Self-Intervention as practical, reusable capabilities for approaching decisions, challenges and future development more effectively.

For local clients, some Personal Coaching sessions may also be available outdoors through Walk and Talk where appropriate. Outdoor coaching is professionally led by Paul Martin, a qualified Mountain Leader, Climbing Instructor and REC Outdoor First Aid trained practitioner.

Speaking & Training

STOP Fearing Fear® Speaking & Training brings Preventive Mental Health Education into professional settings through two core programmes.

Behaviour Before Burnout helps workplaces, leaders, managers and teams recognise how fear, strain and repeated behavioural patterns can develop into avoidance, conflict, disengagement, absence, poor decisions or burnout, then intervene before those outcomes become embedded.

Behaviour and Fear Literacy for Schools and Care Settings helps educators, carers, children’s services and other professionals responsible for young people understand behaviour before it escalates and develop a shared behavioural language around fear, needs, intervention and response.

Both programmes can be delivered as introductory talks, workshops or more structured training shaped around the audience, setting and intended outcomes.

Group Development Days

For organisations, teams, community groups and professional groups that want to develop stronger communication, interpersonal skills, problem-solving and strategic thinking through practical challenge.

Group Development Days are structured sessions that combine managed challenge with reflection, discussion and guided learning. They enable groups to observe how fear, behaviour and decision-making affect communication and team functioning while events are unfolding, then use those insights to improve how they respond together.

This is a developing offer and is available for discussion with suitable lead time. Each session will be shaped around the group, its aims, the location, safety requirements and practical delivery needs.

Not sure where to start?

You do not need to identify the right service before getting in touch.

If something personal, current or unresolved needs focused attention, Personal Intervention is usually the best starting point. If you want structured development over time, Personal Coaching may be more suitable.

For workplaces, organisations, leaders and teams interested in earlier behavioural prevention, Behaviour Before Burnout is the clearest Speaking & Training route. For schools, care settings, children’s services and professionals responsible for young people, the relevant route is Behaviour and Fear Literacy Training.

If you are considering practical, challenge-based development for a group, we can discuss whether a Group Development Day would be suitable.

If you are still unsure, contact Paul with a brief outline of what is happening, what you want to achieve and who the work is for. He will help you identify the most appropriate next step.

The aim is earlier recognition and better response

Every service is built around the same preventive aim: to help people recognise fear earlier, understand the behaviour it drives, interrupt unhelpful loops and take better action before unresolved difficulty develops into avoidance, conflict, burnout, poor decisions or decline.

Different routes. Same behavioural prevention framework. Better recognition. Earlier intervention. Better action.
