Before Behaviour Escalates

Get the STOP Fearing Fear® guide for parents, teachers, carers, social workers and adults supporting children and young people.

Behaviour begins before the visible action

Behaviour does not begin when a child refuses, withdraws, disrupts, argues or becomes aggressive. Those are visible actions produced by a wider underlying process.

Threat → Pre-Cognitive Fear → Appraisal → Feeling → Action → Outcome → Feedback

Before the action, something is perceived as a threat. Pre-cognitive fear activates, the situation is appraised, feeling influences the response and action follows. That action produces an outcome, and the outcome leaves feedback behind, shaping what the child may perceive, think, feel and do next time.

This 7-minute guide introduces a practical, shared behavioural approach for understanding what is happening earlier, supporting more consistent adult responses and helping children develop the capacity for earlier self-intervention before behaviour escalates.

What the guide explains

This guide introduces a practical framework for understanding behaviour before escalation takes hold.

It explains:

  • why behaviour is more than the visible action;
  • how fear, interpretation, feeling, action, outcome and feedback form the Behaviour Cycle;
  • how unmet or threatened needs can shape behaviour;
  • what fear can look like when it appears as refusal, anger, withdrawal, disruption, control, avoidance or aggression;
  • how the MetaSTOP Method® can interrupt reaction and support a more deliberate response;
  • why a shared behavioural language can reduce misunderstanding, inconsistency and avoidable conflict;
  • how earlier supported intervention can gradually develop into earlier self-intervention;
  • and why prevention must begin before crisis, exclusion, breakdown or more intensive support is needed.

The guide is designed to help adults supporting children and young people understand behaviour earlier, respond more consistently and intervene before fear-driven patterns compound into escalation.

A practical prevention approach

STOP Fearing Fear® is a behavioural prevention framework that helps people understand fear and behaviour earlier, respond more effectively and interrupt unhelpful patterns before difficulty becomes embedded or escalates.

This is not therapy pushed upstream.

For schools, care settings, children’s services and professionals responsible for young people, Behaviour and Fear Literacy Training develops a practical shared language around fear, behaviour, needs, escalation, intervention and response.

The Before Behaviour Escalates guide provides an introduction. The speaking and training programme develops that understanding further, helping adults respond more consistently while supporting young people to recognise their own behaviour and use Early Self-Intervention.
