Group Development Days

Practical group development for teams that need to see how they behave when challenge and adversity are real

Practical group development for teams that need to see how they behave when challenge and adversity put them under pressure

Group Development Days are practical STOP Fearing Fear® sessions for teams, groups and organisations seeking to strengthen communication, interpersonal behaviour, problem-solving, strategic planning and decision-making when demand, uncertainty, responsibility or consequence begins to affect behaviour.

This is not entertainment-based team-building, a morale day or a collection of disconnected activities. It is structured behavioural development combining controlled challenge, guided reflection and practical teaching to reveal what happens beneath team performance and develop stronger responses.

Group Development Days are available by discussion and require suitable lead time, allowing each session to be shaped around the group, its aims, location, safety requirements and practical delivery needs.

Most teams do not need another away day

The real test of team behaviour is not how people perform when conditions are calm. It is what happens when demand rises, roles become unclear, time becomes limited, information is incomplete, instructions change, uncertainty increases or decisions carry consequence.

These are the conditions in which communication, problem-solving, planning, decision-making, trust and responsibility are genuinely tested.

That is when behaviour starts to shift

People who normally communicate well may become unclear, defensive, passive, domineering, rushed or closed down. Teams that appear organised may lose structure. Planning becomes reactive. Listening weakens. Assumptions grow. Decisions narrow and responsibility becomes blurred.

Many team problems begin here, not in an obvious crisis, but through repeated moments in which pressure changes behaviour and nobody properly recognises the pattern.

The missing layer is behaviour

A team may say it values communication, but does it check understanding when time is limited? It may say it values trust, but does it remain honest when conflict appears? It may say it values responsibility, but does it make decisions clearly when the outcome matters?

Group Development Days help teams answer those questions through practical experience, not discussion alone.

The activity is not the point.

The behaviour it reveals is.

Behaviour Under Pressure Development Days

Behaviour Under Pressure Development Days use practical, controlled challenges followed by guided reflection and applied teaching. This allows teams to examine how fear, uncertainty, demand and consequence influence decisions, actions, outcomes, feedback and group behaviour.

The challenges are carefully structured. They are not designed to catch people out, embarrass individuals or manufacture stress. Their purpose is to generate useful behavioural learning that can be applied directly to real workplace or group situations.

What Group Development Days do

After each challenge, the team reviews what happened and connects it directly to real workplace or group situations.

What changed when the challenge increased? Where did communication succeed or break down? What assumptions appeared? How were decisions made? What was avoided? Was responsibility clear? What helped the outcome, and what made the task harder?

This structured review turns visible behaviour into practical learning the team can understand, discuss and apply beyond the Development Day.

The four core skills

Group Development Days focus on the four core skills:

  • Communication
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Problem solving
  • Strategic planning

These are not treated as abstract workplace values or classroom-based training themes. They are observed through action, examined through guided reflection and connected directly to practical behaviour.

The aim is to help teams understand how well these skills hold up when challenge, uncertainty, demand or consequence begins to affect the group.

Why fear belongs in group development

When team behaviour changes under pressure, fear may be one of the processes operating beneath it.

People may be responding to perceived threats: failure, judgement, conflict, loss of control, appearing incompetent, challenging someone, making the wrong decision or carrying the consequences.

STOP Fearing Fear® treats fear as essential data, not weakness or dysfunction. Understanding the relationship between perceived threat, fear and behaviour helps teams recognise patterns earlier instead of treating every difficulty as a problem of attitude, personality, motivation or communication in isolation.

The aim is not to make people talk endlessly about fear. It is to help teams recognise what is affecting behaviour and respond more effectively when it matters.

Why metacognitive resilience matters

Metacognitive resilience means recognising and intervening in the behavioural process while it is happening.

Instead of being pulled automatically by fear, assumption, urgency, avoidance, emotional reaction or group momentum, people learn to step back, understand the pattern and choose a more effective response.

Within a team, that may mean checking an unclear instruction, questioning an assumption, making space for useful input, addressing an avoided decision or strengthening a weak plan before the problem escalates.

Group Development Days help teams practise this recognition under controlled challenge, increasing their ability to communicate clearly, make better decisions and adjust their behaviour through feedback.

Who this is for

Group Development Days are for organisations and teams whose work depends on people communicating, planning, solving problems and making sound decisions when conditions become demanding.

They are particularly relevant to managers, operational teams, HR and people-development teams, education and social care settings, frontline services, charities, small businesses and public-facing organisations.

The work can address low trust, role confusion, avoidance, interpersonal tension, silo working, reactive decision-making, leadership responsibility and inconsistent performance under pressure.

Teams do not need to be in crisis. Group Development Days can help organisations act earlier, before unhelpful behavioural patterns become established and begin affecting performance.

Available formats

Half-day Development Session

A focused introduction combining selected challenges, guided reflection and applied teaching. Suitable for teams wanting to examine communication, planning, problem-solving, decision-making and group behaviour within a shorter format.

Full-day Development Day

A deeper session allowing more time for practical challenges, behavioural observation, reflection and workplace application.

Indoor Development Day

A fully indoor, venue-based format using group exercises, tabletop challenges, scenarios, communication tasks and decision-making activities.

Outdoor Development Day

A practical outdoor format using the environment as a structured setting for behavioural development. This is not adventure activity for its own sake; each challenge serves a clear learning purpose.

Mixed-format Development Day

A combination of structured teaching, practical challenges, guided reflection and indoor or outdoor activities where suitable.

Multi-session team development programme

A programme delivered across several sessions, allowing teams to work in greater depth on areas such as communication, interpersonal behaviour, problem-solving, strategic planning, metacognitive resilience, leadership and behaviour under pressure.

The most suitable format, content and practical arrangements will be agreed with the organisation before delivery.

Availability and planning

Group Development Days are not currently offered as a fixed, off-the-shelf product. They are available by discussion and require suitable lead time because each session must be planned and delivered responsibly.

The right format depends on the group, aims, location, participant suitability, activity design, indoor or outdoor delivery, accessibility, weather, equipment, venue, insurance, safety requirements and risk assessment.

This is not a limitation of the offer. It allows each suitable Development Day to be designed around the organisation’s needs rather than forcing every group into the same generic activity format.

What changes after the session?

Participants leave better able to recognise how their own behaviour and the behaviour of the wider team change under pressure.

Teams gain a shared language for examining what happened without reducing every difficulty to personality, attitude, motivation or generic wellbeing.

The intended result is earlier recognition, greater behavioural responsibility and more deliberate communication, planning and decision-making when challenge and adversity arise in real working situations.
