About Paul Martin

Paul Martin is an intervention specialist, educator, speaker, author and creator of STOP Fearing Fear®: a practical behavioural framework designed to help people understand fear more clearly, respond more effectively and build real resilience in everyday life.
STOP Fearing Fear® is psychologically informed, behaviourally organised and prevention-led.
Built through experience
Paul has a strong educational and professional background in education and behaviour intervention. His professional background includes 12 years teaching young people with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties in special and psychiatric education and 10 years working in residential crisis intervention, alongside experience across behavioural support, family work, adult one-to-one, psychiatric settings and outdoor intervention.
These are environments in which pressure is real, behaviour has consequences and better outcomes depend on clarity, responsibility and effective action.
The origins of STOP Fearing Fear® go back further than Paul’s professional career. Long before entering these fields, he had become determined to understand why intelligent, capable people so often behave in ways that work against their own long-term interests.
What began as a personal search became a sustained professional investigation. Over more than 25 years, lived adversity, frontline experience, continued study, behavioural observation and practical intervention gradually combined to form the framework now known as STOP Fearing Fear®.
From understanding crisis to preventing escalation
STOP Fearing Fear® was developed from the ground up, not by imposing theory upon behaviour, but by examining what repeatedly happens when people encounter fear, challenge and adversity in real life.
Rather than focusing solely on symptoms or waiting for crisis, the framework addresses the upstream processes that shape behaviour: what people perceive as threatening, how fear influences appraisal and action, and how unhelpful patterns can be recognised and interrupted before they escalate.
It sits within Preventive Mental Health Education and supports earlier recognition and Early Self-Intervention through Behaviour, Fear and Resilience Education, helping people respond more effectively when it matters.
Today, Paul brings this work into books, speaking, training and direct support for individuals and organisations seeking a clearer, more practical understanding of fear, behaviour, resilience and decision-making.
A life lived outdoors

Walking, climbing, caving and sea kayaking have been long-standing parts of Paul’s life, not activities added to create a new professional image.
Paul is a qualified Mountain Leader and Climbing Instructor, with extensive experience leading and supporting people in outdoor settings. Time outdoors has reinforced qualities central to his wider work: preparation, sound judgement, adaptability, calm decision-making and the willingness to act when circumstances change.
That experience now informs Walk & Talk sessions across Derbyshire and the Peak District. The outdoors supports the conversation, while the intervention or coaching remains the purpose.
