Walk and Talk Sessions in Derbyshire

Personal Intervention and Personal Coaching in the Derbyshire countryside.

For some people, sitting face to face in a room or speaking through a screen is not the easiest way to think clearly, talk honestly or work through something difficult.

Walk & Talk sessions bring Personal Intervention and Personal Coaching into the Derbyshire countryside. The work remains focused, structured and behaviour-led; movement, open space and walking side by side provide a different environment in which to think, talk and move forward.

More than just taking a conversation outdoors

A Walk & Talk session is not simply a walk accompanied by a conversation.

The same focused, structured and behaviour-led work takes place as it would online. The difference is the environment in which it happens.

Walking side by side can make conversation feel less intense than sitting face to face. Movement creates a natural rhythm, while the surrounding space allows room for pauses, reflection and clearer thought.

The walk supports the work. It does not replace it.

Whether the session involves Personal Intervention or Personal Coaching, the conversation focuses on your individual circumstances while also applying the practical behavioural process taught through STOP Fearing Fear®.

This can help you recognise, interrupt and respond differently to similar patterns in the future.

Two services. One outdoor format.

Walk & Talk is the outdoor format through which either Personal Intervention or Personal Coaching can be delivered.

Personal Intervention

Personal Intervention focuses on something current, active or beginning to weigh too heavily.

It may be appropriate when you are dealing with a difficult decision, repeated behavioural pattern, avoidance, conflict, emotional strain, overwhelm, loss of direction or a situation that needs clearer understanding and practical movement.

Personal Coaching

Personal Coaching is structured, forward-facing development for people who are functioning but want to understand their patterns, strengthen how they respond and move forward more deliberately.

Using the Derbyshire countryside

Walk & Talk sessions are not restricted to walking around a town park.

Depending on you, the weather and the purpose of the session, carefully selected locations may include woodland, valleys, reservoirs, canal paths, open countryside and manageable hill routes across Derbyshire and the Peak District.

The countryside supports the work; the route is never the point of the session. This is not an endurance or adventurous activity.

You do not need to be highly fit, confident on hills or experienced outdoors. The route, terrain, distance and pace are selected around your physical ability, confidence, mobility, the weather and what is appropriate for the work.

Why Talk While Walking?

Some people find it easier to talk openly while walking side by side than while sitting face to face.

Movement can help thoughts flow, reduce the intensity of direct eye contact and make pauses or silence feel more natural. Being outdoors can also create distance from the setting in which a difficulty usually occurs, providing space for reflection and a clearer perspective.

The purpose is not simply to exercise, pass the time or make conversation.

It is to create an environment in which honest discussion, clearer thinking and meaningful progress can take place.

What Happens During a Session?

Before booking, we will have an initial conversation about what you need, which service is most appropriate and whether a Walk & Talk session is suitable.

We will then agree on a location, meeting point and route. The route is chosen to support the conversation; it is not intended to be physically demanding, adventurous or technically challenging.

During the session, we walk at a manageable pace while focusing on the difficulty, pattern or area of development you want to address. We can stop when useful, sit on a bench or boulder, find a sheltered location, slow the pace or adjust the route as the session develops.

Whether the session involves Personal Intervention or Personal Coaching, the work remains focused on helping you understand what is happening, recognise unhelpful patterns, gain perspective and identify what needs to happen next.

Professional outdoor leadership

Walk & Talk is not a casual walk around a park. Sessions are carefully planned around you, the purpose of the work, the weather and a suitable route.

Paul Martin is a qualified Mountain Leader and Climbing Instructor, REC Outdoor First Aid trained, with more than a decade of experience leading outdoor-based intervention programmes and extensive experience in mountainous terrain.

That background supports calm, purposeful and professionally led delivery across suitable Derbyshire and Peak District locations.

The environment is selected to support the work. The route is never the test.

Walk & Talk is not an adventure activity, climbing session, scrambling experience or mountain challenge. It is focused Personal Intervention or Personal Coaching conducted outdoors: the landscape supports the conversation, but the conversation remains the purpose of the session.

More demanding outdoor activities require different planning, equipment, insurance and professional arrangements and are not included within this service.

Weather and Changing Conditions

Walk & Talk sessions can take place in normal British weather, but the forecast and ground conditions are considered before every session.

Depending on the conditions, we may choose a more sheltered location, use a shorter or lower-level route, change the meeting point, move the session online or rearrange it.

Conditions can also change while we are walking. If necessary, we can adjust the route, return early or end the outdoor session.

No one is expected to continue in conditions that are unsafe or clearly unsuitable for focused, productive work.

Clothing and Equipment

You will need comfortable footwear and clothing suitable for the agreed route, weather and ground conditions.

Walk & Talk sessions take place throughout the year, weather permitting. Depending on the season, location and forecast, you may need a waterproof coat, warm layers, a hat and gloves, sun protection or other practical clothing appropriate to the conditions.

Light rain does not automatically mean a session needs to be cancelled. Many sessions can still go ahead comfortably with suitable clothing, provided the route and conditions remain appropriate.

Any specific clothing or equipment requirements will be discussed when the location, route and forecast are confirmed.

First Aid and Personal Medication

Paul is REC Outdoor First Aid qualified and carries a professional first-aid kit, emergency shelter and other appropriate safety equipment during Walk & Talk sessions.

Clients remain responsible for bringing any personal medication or essential medical items they may need during the session. This includes inhalers, prescribed medication and anything else normally carried for an existing condition.

Please mention any relevant medical condition, allergy, mobility issue or other health consideration before booking so that the route, location and practical arrangements can be planned appropriately.

Privacy Outdoors

Outdoor sessions cannot provide the same level of controlled privacy as a private room or online call.

Routes, locations and meeting times are chosen with privacy in mind, but other people may occasionally pass nearby. If this happens during a sensitive part of the conversation, we can pause, change the subject, adjust the route or wait until they have moved away.

The practical limits of privacy and confidentiality outdoors will be discussed before booking so that you can decide whether a Walk & Talk session is appropriate for you.

Is Walk and Talk Suitable for Everyone?

Walk & Talk will not be the right format for every person or situation.

An online session may be more appropriate where mobility, health, weather, privacy, travel, personal preference or the nature of the work makes walking outdoors unsuitable.

Suitability will be discussed before booking. If another format or service appears more appropriate, this will be explained clearly.

Locations

Walk & Talk sessions are available at suitable locations around Wirksworth, Carsington Water and Bakewell, across the Derbyshire Dales and in selected parts of the Peak District within practical travelling distance of Wirksworth.

Depending on the client, weather and purpose of the session, locations may extend northwest towards Hartington, the upper Dove Valley, the Dragon’s Back area and Buxton, or northeast towards Curbar, Froggatt and Bamford.

A wide range of settings can be considered, from accessible, lower-level routes to quieter, more open, higher or more remote countryside where this is appropriate.

The location and route will be selected around your preferences, physical suitability, confidence, travel, privacy, weather and the purpose of the session. The exact meeting point and route will always be agreed in advance.

Duration and Cost

Walk & Talk is an outdoor way of delivering either Personal Intervention or Personal Coaching. It is not priced as a separate service.

The duration, structure and cost will therefore depend on which service you choose.

Full details, including current prices, are available on the relevant service pages.
